The top-three most energy efficient municipalities in Denmark were appointed in 2008, and Skive can now boast the title "Energy Town".
On Monday, the 6th October 2008 Skive Municipality together with Kolding and Copenhagen were appointed Denmark’s first "Energy Towns".
To be eligible for the title, the municipality must be a front-runners on climate and energy and be able to produce results, while maintaining a continued and constant commitment to renewable energy.
With the title follows an obligation to continue the efforts in the future, where Skive will be an inspiration for other municipalities and towns in Denmark and abroad, as the three energy towns will be presented as model municipalities up until the Climate Summit in Copenhagen in 2009.
Therefore construction manager Finn Dissing was very pleased with the new title, and he says:
"We are extremely proud to receive this appointment, but on the other hand we find it is a natural consequence of the prizes we have received earlier for our efforts in this area. We are also pleased that with this title our activities will unfold even further to comprise the entire municipality and all the citizens". He stresses, however, that it is only the beginning of the efforts for at better climate:
"It is a process that lasts many years, so this is only the first step."
The energy towns must meet the following requirements:
- The municipality must involve its citizens and communities in the energy and climate work.
- It must enter a curve-breaking agreement with the Energy Saving Trust and commit to a reduction in energy consumption.
- Within one year, the municipality must have
- obtained a municipal climate agreement with the Danish Society for Nature Conservation,
- set specific targets for reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions in their own buildings,
- specified requirements for energy consumption in new buildings and residential areas,
- taken steps to reduce transport energy consumption, for example by demands on the municipality's own cars,
- incorporated climate adaptations into municipal planning.
- The municipality must undertake to disseminate its know-how to other municipalities .
